I recently read an essay about why we buy memoirs and biographies of artists, athletes, and politicians. The main thesis was that we desperately want to know what it is (at least what we assume) to be genius. The only trouble with that today is, I think, that we don't even get to choose which celebrity's cult following we become a part of. Half of the decision is made automatically as to not be without a particular cultural (or niche/elitist/subcultural) group. Our 24/7 connectedness enables parasocial relationships and even strenghtens them. I kind of wish we had less access to our favorite artists; I'm sure they'd appreciate it as well. Great piece!
this read like a conversation i didn’t know i needed until halfway through. equal parts confession and confrontation in the best way. it’s rare to see someone write through ambiguity without trying to resolve it. refreshing, honestly

Second of all, I've never been in a parasocial relationship(that i know of) with a celebrity simply because i genuinely cannot see celebrities as so much better than average and relate to them at the same time, and if i don't relate to them i have a really hard time being inspired by them(narcissist much?) and just wanted to say that i've always been kinda of jealous of people who can trust someone to the point some "stans" do, like i know most people hate that part of their history but it's just so hard for me to understand that relationship with literal strangers that it becomes kinda of fascinating

Also, your words resonated with me quite well cause I'm someone who is currently in, and has been in multiple fandoms; and has gone through the mental gymnastics of understanding what that means with exaggerated passing year. One thing that has helped me was reading the addicted series. It was a long time ago( I was in my romance books era) but just that small insight into how crazy life in fame could be made me understand fan behavior so much better.
